The Outcome

NEWSUBSTANCE were originally commissioned to design, fabricate, install and activate the Guinness World Record breaking Disco Ball back in 2014 by Bestival festival directors Josie and Rob da Bank. When Duke Studios contacted us about the concept for the Big Disco it hinged on the availability of the ball, which is owned by Bestival. NEWSUBSTANCE spoke to Josie and Rob who were happy to loan the ball for the event.

The Ball arrived on a 40ft flatbed from the Isle of Wight wrapped in a custom made tarpaulin. A telehandler lifted the structure off the truck and placed it in the centre of the site. Six 1T ballast blocks were preset to which the Disco Ball would attach from its equatorial tethers. Utilising a 110T crane we hooked up the Ball and began inflation keeping a close eye on the wind conditions and regularly adjusting the tethers. Once fully inflated and secure we set about cleaning it down and replacing the tiles that were in disrepair.

Conditions on show day were challenging with strong gusts of wind however a weather window presented itself and the Disco Ball was raised and rotated following a countdown from an expectant and very enthusiastic crowd!
