Technical Designer / Design Engineer: 3 Month Fixed Term or Freelance

NEWSUBSTANCE is a multidisciplinary creative studio. For over 20 years, we have been orchestrating physically-led, technology-enhanced moments that compel audiences and capture imaginations. From artistic installations, icons and spatial interventions to spine tingling shows, ceremonies, experiences and immersive worlds our studio blends both artistry and engineering.
We’re looking for an experienced Technical Designer / Design Engineer who can integrate quickly into the studio team on a number of ongoing and upcoming global projects.
Contract
- 3 Month fixed-term contract or freelance.
- Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
Salary
£45,000 per annum, pro rata for this 3-month fixed-term contract — or freelance day/month rate by negotiation.
Location
West Yorkshire, UK – a hybrid role combining home-based working with presence in our Leeds studio & workshop.
What you’ll be doing
- Developing and communicating practical, design solutions that support the creative vision of the project and help with the overall translation of concepts from render to reality.
- Building detailed 3D models of structures, assemblies and mechanisms.
- Producing clear drawings and documentation for clients, partners and the wider team.
- Getting drawings ready for manufacture and installation where required.
- Working closely with creative, technical and production teams to keep everything aligned.
- Supporting the build — being on hand to help solve problems on site.
- Designing with manufacture in mind — materials, assembly, fit and finish.
What we’re looking for
- Solid experience in live events, themed environments, exhibitions, experiential work or performance structures.
- The ability to manage the interplay between art and engineering.
- Comfortable working independently and managing your own priorities.
- Strong, professionally-gained experience in SolidWorks / inventor or a similar 3D CAD package.
- A clear, confident communicator who can work with people at all levels.
- Able to stay organised and calm when things move fast or briefs shift.
- Understanding of how multi-partner projects come together
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing.
- A good sense of the full design, production and delivery process.
- Willing to travel to site when needed.
Nice to have
- Deeper knowledge of manufacturing materials and techniques.
- Experience managing or working closely with suppliers.
- Confidence presenting to clients.
- Previous freelance or short-contract experience.
